Boitumelo, a varsity student is one of the students we found on Facebook. When we saw her beautiful mane and style, we had to do an interview with her.

Origins and current location?
I am born and bred in the city of roses, better known as Bloemfontein.

What are you currently studying?
I am a third year student at the University of the Free State currently studying B.Sc Microbiology.

How long have you been natural? Briefly take us through your natural hair journey.
Well, I started growing my hair in 2007/08 for six months until I decided to blow it out.I did not like it at all as it actually looked relaxed so i decided to relax my hair again.Hardly two months and I cut it off  and started afresh. Ever since that day I have been rocking natural hair.I have had it for almost two years now.

Why did you decide to go natural?
I  have always loved natural hair but  I could never experience it because i was still in school and it was considered to be “untidy”. Right after my Matric farewell, we were all given our privileges and the first thing I did was to chop chop chop the chemically contaminated hair off of my beautiful African scalp. lol

What are the challenges and advantages since you went natural?
Waking up in the morning clueless about a hairstyle to rock (especially when late for class) is about the only challenge I am faced with.

What is your hair care regimen and what products do you use?
I am old school so after I wash my hair with sunlight(green traditional bar soap) and mosturise it with  a mixture of Castor oil and Sta-so-fro, I plait it before I go to sleep. That’s if I want to stretch it.

What’s the natural hair scene like at your campus & in your city?
It is a bit hard to say because majority of the ladies are always rocking weaves. In my city there are a lot of ladies rocking natural and I must say, most of them have beautiful hair.

Are your family & friends comfortable with you rocking your hair natural or do you get one of those “when-are-you-straightening-your-hair?” types?
I actually get one of those”don’t-you-dare-straighten-your-hair” types. My mom absolutely loves my hair and says I remind her of her own hair back in her time.lol

Where do you buy your hair products?
Anywhere really. There are no specific stores for my hair products.

Do you  treat and style your own hair or leave it to the professionals?
I do my own hair unless I want to put on a weave. When it comes to that part, I leave it to my friends.

Weaved up

What’s your favourite natural hair salon?
My room is my favourite salon.lol

What natural hairstyle(s) do you like to rock?
I honestly don’t know what the name of the hairstyle is,so let me name it Tumie’s push front. Pic below:
