Origins and current location?
From Rustenburg, currently in Pretoria.
What are you currently up to?
I am attorney practicing corporate law.
How long have you been natural? Briefly take us through your natural hair journey.
I had long relaxed hair, and experimented a lot with hair bleach whilst in university. I bleached my hair platinum blonde. As a result, it was badly damaged, and I chopped it all off. I was inspired by Mmabatho Montsho’s Afro, but my Afro was hard and difficult to comb. I was advised by my then hair salon stylist to put a bit of relaxer on it to soften it up. I ended up not liking that Afro as it was chemically treated. I then cut it all off again, and started from scratch. So, my journey with my natural hair has been a convoluted one.
Why did you decide to go natural?
Apart from the damage caused by bleaching my hair, I grew tired of conforming to the stereotypical look of beauty being defined as straight long hair, and wanted to show that I could still be beautiful with natural hair.
What are some of the challenges and advantages you’ve experienced since you went natural?
I like that I can style my natural hair in a host of different styles, and still get to keep the hair. For example, I can rock a mo-hawk, by plaiting the sides & leaving the Afro in the middle. That will not be easy or as nice with relaxed hair. I find, however, that natural hair requires rigorous maintenance, and it is very sore when I skip a wash or treatment and when I comb it.
What is your hair care regimen?
I try to go for a treatment and wash at the salon, but I often do it myself. I plait my hair into small “maphondos” every night and cover it with a doek or old pantyhose. This way it is softer when I comb it in the morning.
You also wear weaves often. How do you take care of your natural hair and scalp when you have one on?
I wash and treat my hair even when I have the weave on. I also use a moisturizing hair spray so that my natural hair does not become dry and neglected. I also apply hair food to protect the hair line from receding.
Do you wear weaves because you find your natural hair to be too high maintenance or is it just for protective purposes (to avoid breakage, retain length, etc.)?
My profession is still conservative and I tend to wear weaves because of that. But I am not a conformist and still rock my afro to consultations and court when I feel like it. So, I wear weaves mostly to retain length as my afro has not reached my desired length.
What hair products do you use and where do you buy them?
I use Virgin-hair hair food and Sta-Sof-Fro moisturizing hair spray which I purchase from Discom.
Do you have a favourite natural hair salon where you treat your hair?
I change hair salons all the time, as I am yet to find one that gives me the desired result. So, I often treat my hair at home.
Which type of natural hairstyle(s) do you like to rock?
Combing out my Afro, and back to front conrows.
